Read the result and keep its limits
A clear figure is useful only with the people, the comparison and the time beside it. Here is how to read the evidence behind an offer.
Read the result with its comparison
For semaglutide (Wegovy), a weight-loss study reports a group average, not a forecast for each person.
What the main weight trial found
STEP 1 is the name of a research study, rather than an instruction for you. Its adult volunteers had no diabetes.
They joined because they had obesity, or were overweight and had a health problem linked to their weight.
Food and activity support accompanied both sets of injections.
With semaglutide: average weight loss of 14.9%.
With the comparison injection: average weight loss of 2.4%.
Wilding and colleagues’ report of the weight trial
Novo Nordisk, the medicine’s maker, paid for this study. Both groups had regular visits and help with food and activity as well as their injections.
The result describes that whole study plan. It does not show what medicine without those visits and support would achieve.
Ask the care service which visits and help with food and activity its own offer includes.
Also ask what happens after treatment
In a smaller follow-up group, roughly two-thirds of the lost weight returned over the year after treatment ended.
The follow-up report on weight returning
That finding makes a useful visit question: how will we review my plan over time, including if treatment ends?
Choose a source for the question at hand
| Question | Source to read |
|---|---|
| What did the study show? | The trial paper describes the people studied and the average result. |
| What is the medicine label saying? | The label sets out the named uses and cautions for that product. |
| Is this doctor licensed? | The state board record answers the licence question; it does not grade the care. |
Medicine details — Wegovy label
Compounding rules — FDA’s dated updates
Doctor records — state board directory
For a later appointment, ask for the current medicine label and have your plan confirm current cover. Keep the written answers beside the offer.
