# Plan for problems before they happen

Keep the help plan with the medicine name. Know whom to ask about a new problem, and how the service handles a concern between visits.

## Common does not mean easy to live with

The semaglutide (Wegovy) label lists feeling sick, loose stools, vomiting and trouble passing stool as common problems with the injection.

Some stomach problems can be severe; fluid lost through vomiting or loose stools can harm the kidneys.

Ask the person prescribing how to report a problem and who will reply before the next planned visit.

## Keep urgent help separate from a routine message

What is happening

What the source says

Severe signs of an allergic reaction

Severe allergy signs, including a swollen tongue or difficulty breathing, call for emergency help.

MedlinePlus describes this kind of reaction as a medical emergency.

Lasting or severe belly pain

The Wegovy label warns that lasting or severe belly pain, sometimes spreading to the back, can signal the serious illness called pancreatitis.

The label directs the prescriber to stop Wegovy if that illness is suspected.

Contact the prescriber promptly about this warning sign; do not leave it for a routine visit.

Ask how the care service handles urgent problems. A routine message thread is not the same as an emergency response.

## Some health histories change the choice

### Read the cancer warning in full

Semaglutide labels carry the strongest warning format, called a boxed warning, about tumours found in rats and mice.

Whether semaglutide causes those tumours in people remains unknown.

The warning names a rare cancer, medullary thyroid cancer. A personal or family diagnosis of that cancer rules out semaglutide under the label.

Its listed warning signs include a lump in the neck and lasting hoarseness. It also lists trouble with swallowing or breathing.

MEN 2 is the name of another illness that rules semaglutide out: a rare disorder passed down through families.

Bring the name of any diagnosed family illness for the prescriber to check; there is no need to identify it from symptoms yourself.

A past serious allergy to semaglutide or any other ingredient also rules it out.

### Pregnancy and planned procedures belong in the conversation

The Wegovy label includes cautions about pregnancy, so pregnancy plans belong in the discussion before prescribing.

It also asks people to tell their surgical team about semaglutide before a planned procedure.

The concern is stomach contents entering the lungs under anaesthesia or deep sedation, medicines that make you sleep or less aware.

It does not settle whether stopping the drug beforehand reduces that concern; the plan belongs with the surgical team.

These label details reflect the records checked on 26 September 2026.
